Thunderbolt™ technology has emerged as the fastest way to transfer data between a PC and peripheral and display devices. Thunderbolt™ technology has emerged as an I/O standard with flexibility, performance and simplicity. At 10 Gbps full-duplex bandwidth per channel, Thunderbolt™ technology merges high-speed data (PCI Express) and display (DisplayPort) onto a single protocol. Thunderbolt™ 2 allows combining both channels into a single 20 Gbps full-duplex channel enabling transmission of uncompressed high-bandwidth data such as 4K video.

Thunderbolt™ Host/Peripheral

The Thunderbolt™ host/peripheral provides power to the cable through the TPS22981 at either 3.3 V or high voltages up to 15 V nominal. TheLM3481 is the boost DC-DC converter providing the high voltage to the TPS22981 to be delivered to the cable and is capable of providing power for two Thunderbolt™ ports. The TPS65980 is a buck DC/DC converter which provides the low voltage supply to the TPS22981 and can provide power to two Thunderbolt™ ports. The TPS22920/L load switch controls the I/O power rail to the Thunderbolt™ Controller.

The HD3SS0001 is a high speed FET switch which selects between DisplayPort and Thunderbolt™ data. The HD3SS0001 also supports DP and DP++ configurations. The MSP430FR57xx provides any additional control needed in the Thunderbolt™ host, with incorporated FRAM.

Thunderbolt™ Cable

The TPS22986 auto-selects the proper 3.3 V supply and provides power to the active cable circuitry.
