Texas Instruments Unveils High-Performance Audio DAC for Consumer and Professional Audio Systems

24-Bit, 192kHz device extends family of high-performance audio solutions

High Performance Audio DAC -- PCM1738

TUCSON, Ariz. (Jan. 31, 2001) -- Texas Instruments (TI) Incorporated (NYSE: TXN) today announced a high-performance audio digital-to-analog converter (DAC) from the company's Burr-Brown product line, designed specifically for high-performance consumer and professional audio systems such as DVD and CD players, A/V receivers, Super Audio CD (SACD) players, HDTV receivers, digital effects processors, and digital mixing consoles. See http://www.ti.com/sc/aap5733u.

The PCM1738 utilizes TI's newly developed Advanced Segment DAC architecture to achieve excellent dynamic performance and improved tolerance to clock jitter. At 24-bit resolution and 192kHz sampling, the PCM1738 delivers 117dB dynamic range, 117dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and very low distortion (0.0004%). The device operates from dual power supplies (+3.3V and 5V).

"The PCM1738 is a dynamic addition to TI's extensive portfolio of high-performance analog and mixed-signal audio products from Burr-Brown," said Yuzo Sugiki, marketing manager of Burr-Brown Audio Products from TI. "Furthermore, when you combine TI's new portfolio of high-performance audio components with TI's platform of audio-specific DSP chips, we can now offer the designer a complete, one-stop audio system solution."

The PCM1738 provides balanced current outputs, allowing the user to optimize analog performance externally. The device accepts industry standard audio data formats with 16- to 24-bit data, providing easy interfacing to audio DSP and decoder chips.

Additionally, the device has two optional modes of operation: an external digital filter mode (for use with TI's DF1704 and DF1706 digital interpolation filters), and a DSD decoder interface for SACD playback applications. A full set of user-programmable functions are accessible through a four-wire serial control port that supports register write and read functions.

Available Today

The PCM1738 is available now and is packaged in a SSOP-28. It is priced from $4.95 in 1,000 piece quantities.
