Westell And Texas Instruments Technologies Expand Capabilities Of Westell's Access 4000™ Broadband Integrated Access Device To Include Voice Over DSL

First Multi-Networking Platform of its Kind

AURORA, IL, and DALLAS (February 8, 2001) -- Westell Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: WSTL) through its Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) Business Unit, and Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN), today announced that Westell is implementing one of TI's industry-leading voice over digital subscriber line (VoDSL) solutions to further enhance Westell's new Access 4000(tm) broadband multi-networking platform. The Access 4000(tm) incorporates TI's ultra power efficient programmable digital signal processor technology and Telogy Software(tm) products.

Westell's Access 4000™ is the first broadband multi-networking platform for small business and home networking. It is the first such device on the market today to provide multiple networking options, including HPNA, Wireless LAN, USB and Ethernet, which can all be used simultaneously on a shared DSL connection via plug-in modules and PCMCIA cards. A user upgradable business and residential solution, the Access 4000™ combines high-speed data, shared networking and voice services in one multi-networking platform, at an affordable price point to competing integrated access devices (IADs). The incorporation of TI's VoDSL solution enables the Access 4000 to support both voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and voice over asynchronous transfer mode (VoATM) services.

With Westell's selection of TI's solution, TI further strengthens its position as the leading VoDSL silicon and software technology provider within the rapidly expanding small office/home office (SOHO) market. According to In-Stat, service revenues from VoDSL services are expected to reach $9 billion in 2003. For Westell, the TI technology is in keeping with its strategy of ensuring against obsolescence by providing products with flexible architecture that can be easily upgraded to accommodate a range of new capabilities in the future.

"The Access 4000™ leverages TI's leading VoDSL solution to add significant value to the product beyond its unique multi-networking platform advantage," said Mike Santiago, Vice President and General Manager, Westell CPE Business Unit. "In addition to VoDSL, we will introduce other products based on TI technologies including ADSL and other broadband solutions. This is another example of the value of Westell's close relationship with TI, which supports us in our mission to offer superior yet cost-effective technology solutions to our customers."

"We are very pleased that Westell, a leading provider of broadband networking solutions, has chosen TI to provide full-featured VoDSL capabilities for the Access 4000™," said Dennis Gatens, product management director of Telogy Networks, A Texas Instruments Company. "Our technologies will take the Access 4000™ to the next level of performance and interoperability." Westell plans to make available the Access 4000™ for trials beginning this March.
