TI's Low-Noise Line Driver and Receiver Solutions Increase Achievable Reach and Rate in ADSL Broadband Communications

High-Performance Amplifiers Set New Level of Noise Performance for ADSL CPE Modems

Low-Noise DSL Driver and Receiver DALLAS (April 5, 2001) -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) today announced a new family of high-speed line driver and receiver solutions designed specifically for customer premise equipment (CPE) modems used in Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) broadband communications. TI's low-noise line driver family and line receiver are available in industry-standard pin-compatible packages making it easy for designers to upgrade existing designs for increased system performance. (See http://www.ti.com/sc/adsl.)

The reduction of noise provided by the THS60xx line driver family and the OPA2822 line receiver decreases the overall noise floor of the downstream signal, leading to improved data rates and wider service area for ADSL modem deployments. These devices target PC external and internal modems, residential gateways, and other systems used for high-speed ADSL access by households and small businesses.

The THS604x/5x/9x line driver family features extremely low differential output noise - a reduction of up to 40 percent from earlier solutions. The OPA2822 line receiver, from TI's Burr-Brown product line, features a very low input noise supported with exceptionally low harmonic distortion - particularly in differential configurations.

"With the high-performance THS60xx and OPA2822, TI has put its advanced design and process technologies to work to meet the increasing performance needs of ADSL customers," said Jim Zell, product marketing manager for TI's broadband amplifier products. "TI's ADSL line drivers and receivers give designers the flexibility they need to easily improve their system performance in both established and next-generation designs."

Key specifications of each product include the following:

  • The THS6042/43 offer 350-mA output drive, operate over a wide +/-5V to +/-15V supply range, and deliver 13dBm output power to the telephone line (using a +/-12V supply voltage and 1:1 transformer). The devices offer extremely low non-inverting current noise of 2.1 pA/rt-Hz and low -79 dBc total harmonic distortion (250 kHz, G=4, 2 Vp-p, 100 ohm load).
  • The THS6052/53 offer 175-mA output drive, operate over a wide +/-5V to +/-15V supply range, and are ideal for shorter loop ADSL CPE applications which have lower output power requirements. The devices feature 1.2 pA/rt-Hz non-inverting current noise and low -85 dBc total harmonic distortion (250 kHz, G=4, 2 Vp-p, 100 ohm load).
  • The THS6092/93 offer 275-mA output drive, operate over a +5V to +14V supply range, and deliver 13dBm output power to the telephone line (using single +12V supply voltage and 1:2 transformer). The devices feature 2.5 pA/rt-Hz non-inverting current noise and low -77 dBc total harmonic distortion (250 kHz, G=4, 2 Vp-p, 25 ohm load).
  • The OPA2822 operates on a low 4.8-mA/channel supply current and can satisfy all DSL receiver requirements over a wide range of supply voltages (from a single +5V to +/-5V on up to a single +12V design). The device features 2.0 nV/rt-Hz input noise and <-100 dBc harmonic distortion (1 MHz input frequencies, 2 Vp-p, +5V to +12V supplies).

The driver family also features a 1-bit digital control pin on the THS6043/53/93 which put the devices into a high impedance shutdown mode where they consume just 0.3 mA of quiescent current while the CPE modem is in standby.

Availability and Pricing

The THS60xx family is sampling now, with volume production scheduled for April 2001, and is offered in a variety of package options including an 8-lead SOIC, 8-lead SOIC PowerPAD, 14-lead TSSOP PowerPAD and 14-pin SOIC package. The THS6042/43 are priced from $2.85 in 1,000 piece quantities. The THS6052/53 are priced from $2.45 in 1,000 piece quantities. The THS6092/93 are priced from $2.29 in 1,000 piece quantities. The OPA2822 is available now and is packaged in an 8-lead SOIC and an 8-lead MSOP. The OPA2822 is priced from $2.19 in 1,000 piece quantities.
