Texas Instruments Enables Deployment of 10 Gigabit Ethernet with Transceiver Targeting Backplanes, Switches and Routers

Industry's First Available Serial Transceiver Based on IEEE 802.3ae Draft Specification

DALLAS, (March 21, 2001) -- The industry's first available serial transceiver for 10 Gigabit Ethernet is now available from Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN). The transceiver, which is based on the IEEE 802.3ae draft specification for 10 Gigabit Ethernet and designed in TI's CMOS technology, enables communication end equipment vendors to bring their products to market quickly, addressing local, metropolitan and wide area networks (LAN, MAN and WAN). Additionally, the device allows optical module vendors the ability to integrate the functionality into their solutions. (See http://www.ti.com/sc/msds5977u.)

"We selected TI's 10 gigabit serial transceiver not only because it was the first product to market, but it is also the industry's most robust solution for transmitting synchronized data throughput," said Marc Randall, Vice President of Engineering for Force10 Networks. "By working with TI, we are ensured that our products will be brought to market as quickly as possible." In backplane designs, the TLK3104SA enables higher port density systems by reducing board space, system costs and power consumption. This results in networking infrastructure equipment that packs more high-speed channels in less space and saves operating costs for network service providers.

The full-duplex transceiver provides four 3.125 Gbps channels that can operate independently or synchronized. When independent, the TLK3104SA accepts input on four selectable 8- or 10-bit interfaces and drives out four channels of low voltage psuedo-emitter coupled logic (LVPECL) signaling. When operating in 10 Gigabit Ethernet mode, the four channels are synchronized and support an aggregate bandwidth of 12.5Gbps. For easier implementation by designers, the parallel inputs also auto-select between HSTL (1.8V) or SSTL Class 2 signaling.

Development Support

Evaluation kits include samples, evaluation modules, a reference design and documentation to help simplify design and speed time to market. Patented on-chip test functionality with access to signals both internally and externally supports faster testing and debug, promoting greater reliability.

Availability

TI's TLK3104SA transceiver is sampling now, with volume production scheduled for the second quarter of 2001. Pricing in volume is $80 per unit in quantities of 1,000 units.
