TI's New Highly Integrated DSP Reduces System Size and Power by 3X for Digital Imaging Appliances, Personal Video Cameras and Security Devices

TMS320C5509 DSP HOUSTON (August 1, 2001) - Delivering on promised technology, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) announced today that the power-efficient, peripheral-rich TMS320C5509 is now sampling allowing designers of hand-held multimedia products to begin designing next generation products immediately. The C5509 DSP, the second member of the award winning low-power TMS320C55x(tm) DSP generation, maintains code-compatibly with the industry leading TMS320C54x(tm) DSPs, and features a new architecture that delivers the power-efficient performance and dedicated on-board peripherals required for hand-held multimedia applications such as digital imaging appliances, personal video cameras, personal medical, identification, and security devices. See http://www.dspvillage.ti.com/c5509promo1 for more information.

TI's C5509 DSP incorporates functions that would otherwise need to be enabled by external devices, reducing board space, parts count, and overall product cost. This integration combined with the inherent power efficiency of the TMS320C55x DSP improves battery life up to 70 percent and allows the end product to offer more features in a smaller footprint.

"TI has been in the DSP industry for almost 20 years, and we have seen DSP technology grow increasingly important in the design of hand-held portable appliances, something we anticipated two years ago when we defined the C55x™ DSP core," said Christine Wu, product marketing manager at TI. "TI offers the most power-efficient DSPs available today, and we continue to focus on working with our customers to deliver the products for them to succeed in their markets."

Industry's Most Comprehensive Peripheral Set

  • USB 1.1 port for direct connection to a PC,
  • 10-bit ADC to enable battery monitoring and button interfaces,
  • I2C interface to microcontrollers and codecs for inter-chip communication,
  • Three multi-channel buffered serial ports (McBSPs) for full-duplex communication
  • Interfaces for the most popular removable data storage formats -- Sony Memory Stick and MMC/SD.
  • Accommodation of intellectual property protection,
  • 64-bit device ID, secure ROM and disconnect options for JTAG access.

Other features of the C5509 DSP include 32 Kwords of dual-access SRAM; 96 Kwords of single-access SRAM; 32 Kwords of ROM; a six-channel DMA; an enhanced 16-bit host port interface; a watchdog timer; real-time clock with 32-kHz crystal input and separate power supply; and two 20-bit general purpose timers.

The C5509 device is supported by the most complete, field-proven development platform in the industry - eXpressDSP™ Real-Time Software Technology. This extensive suite of tools features the Code Composer Studio™ Integrated Development Environment; the DSP/BIOS™ real-time kernel; the TMS320™ DSP Algorithm Standard and a large and growing range of application software from TI's 400-member third-party network of developers.

Availability

Samples of the TMS320C5509 DSP are available today in 144-pin LQFP (part number: TMS320VC5509PGE) and 179-pin MicroStar BGA™ (part number: TMS320VC5509GHH) packages. Full production begins in the first quarter of 2002 at a price of $18 (10,000 qty). The C5509 DSP evaluation module (EVM) is available from Spectrum Digital (www.spectrumdigital.com/sales/), a TI third party, for a limited time at $995. C5509 DSP overview and technical training are available at http://www.ti.com/sc/docs/training/training.htm
