TI Extends Battery Life in Portable Consumer Audio Systems with World's Lowest Power Audio DACs
Audio DACs from TI's Burr-Brown Product Line Improve Audio Fidelity, Enhancing Overall Audio Portfolio
TOKYO (Sept. 18, 2001) - A new family of high-performance digital-to-analog converters (DAC) for consumer audio applications including mobile phones; portable digital audio players using MP3, WMA or AAC; PDAs; and digital still cameras will be announced today from Texas Instruments (TI) (NYSE: TXN). Recognizing customer's desires for longer battery life, the PCM177x family of audio DACs offers the lowest power consumption and the lowest supply voltages in the industry, and interface directly to TI's C5x and C6x DSPs. Although low in power consumption, the converters offer excellent audio performance in consumer audio systems. They are multi-functional and capable of mixing the voice input with the DAC output for playback, reducing component count and cost for the end product, as well as shrinking the mounting footprint. They also incorporate pop and noise-free circuits, for silent power on and off. The DACs offer the lowest power alternative for customers desiring low output power, complementing TI's TLV320DAC23 and TLV320AIC23, today's industry standard for low-power, high-performance audio DACs and codecs respectively.
"The new PCM177x DAC family offers customer's a high-performance and high-quality audio solution that extends battery life," said Yuzo Sugiki, marketing manager, TI Digital Audio. "By integrating a headphone amplifier, customer's can drive headphone's directly with this new family of DACs, further reducing the size of portable consumer electronics."
A total of four products are offered within the PCM177x family, providing a headphone amp and a line amp and a variety of control methods and features. All products in the PCM177x DAC family are optimized for use in portable electronic devices, where increased audio performance, extended battery life and reduced size are key design goals. The PCM177x uses a low voltage source of 1.6 to 3.6 Volts (V), while providing power consumption of just 5 microamperes or 9.6 microwatts (typical).
The high-performance internal headphone amplifier provides a power output of 10 milliwatts (mW) (stereo) or 20mW (monaural) into a load of 16 ohms. Dynamic Range is 96dB (typical), and THD+N is 0.032% (typical) at 0dB.
With the PCM177x family, customer's are able to design applications such as portable cell phone gaming that require simultaneous listening to stereophonic music and a monaural voice signal. This is the result of the family's internal analog mixing function that combines an analog input with the DAC output during playback in the headphone amplifier output.
TI's Leadership in the Audio Market
The PCM177x family complements TI's broad portfolio of audio data converters, such as the TLV320DAC23 and TLV320AIC23, the industry's most highly integrated and lowest power audio codec, featuring 16- to 32-bits of resolution, very low power consumption, and an extremely small footprint package. In addition, the family easily interfaces with TI's programmable C5x and C6x families of DSPs.
Combining the DA250 DSP with the PCM177x family offers a complete, high-performance turnkey solution for portable digital audio players. In addition to high performance portable audio ICs, TI offers high-performance solutions for DVD receiver, digital radio, RW CD-Rom, and music cell phone applications. By leveraging the programmability, performance headroom and design flexibility of TI's leading DSP and analog technologies, customers can build feature-rich audio products with more functionality that offer a true, lifelike sound experience at a lower overall system cost.
