Personal Telecom Demonstrates Breakthrough Technology at Booth L5723-67EIAK
HOUSTON (November 14, 2001) - An ultra-low power Eureka digital audio broadcast (DAB) solution from Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) is introduced today as the engine of the world's smallest portable digital radio receiver. The breakthrough technology, which enables the transmission of CD-quality sound and data broadcasts over hand-held devices will be demonstrated by Personal Telecom (PersTel) at the Comdex Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. TI's power efficient TMS320DRE200 digital baseband and analog chipset are at the heart of PersTel's new offering. Using TI's low power TMS320C5000 digital signal processing (DSP) technology, this design offers MP3 and DAB digital radio capability, as well as voice recording and FM tuning. PersTel will offer this design to consumer electronics manufacturers that are interested in creating DAB digital radios. The design is scheduled to be available in first quarter 2002.
"Low power consumption is vital to the future of digital radios if they are to be a mass-market reality," said Y Won, PersTel's chief marketing officer. "We turned to TI because their solution, the DRE200 digital baseband, enabled us to offer a differentiated, portable product that wouldn't cost much and was easy to design."
"We believe battery-operated radios will be vital for the DAB market," said Naresh Coppisetti, manager of TI's DAB digital radio business. "The DRE200 digital baseband combines low power, low cost and ease-of-use to allow our customers to do great things with their own end products."
TI has simplified the design - giving manufacturers flexibility and ease-of-build - and has enabled the fast market delivery of differentiated, inexpensive products by offering a complete receiver system solution. The potential for these new feature-rich, hybrid radio products is unlimited with MP3 recording and mobile commerce. TI's digital radio offering complements a suite of audio products including Internet audio, digital amplifier, Class-D amplifier and audio/video home theater receiver solutions.
