Texas Instruments Combines Integrated Development Environments for a DSP and Microcontroller in a Single Set of Tools
Code Composer Studio for eXpressDSP extended for cost-effective, multi-core support in mobile device applications
DALLAS (Nov. 28, 2001) - To further enable application developers to deliver 2.5G and 3G applications for mobile devices, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) today introduced the Code Composer Studio(tm) Integrated Development Environment (IDE) v2 for the OMAP(tm) platform. This is the first IDE to enable customers to simultaneously optimize and debug both the digital signal processor (DSP) and the microcontroller by integrating the unique technologies into one complete, easy-to-use set of tools. Leveraging more than twenty years of software tools expertise and more than six years of DSP + GPP co-development, TI is extending its initiative to provide OMAP developers with cost-effective solutions that enable faster time to market. Please see www.ti.com/sc/omapccs.
Code Composer Studio IDE v2 for the OMAP platform combines the TMS320C5000 DSP and the TMS470 ARM tools into an integrated development environment specific for a heterogeneous debug of an OMAP platform-enabled device. This single set of tools eliminates compatibility issues, complicated configurations and tedious software over-installs, reducing startup and training time by 40 percent. Code Composer Studio IDE v2 for the OMAP platform permits users to simultaneously debug the DSP and ARM processors with synchronous and individual commands, as well as the ability to set global breakpoints through TI's parallel debug manager utility. Through the popular JTAG interface, the OMAP platform IDE supports the embedded trace module on the TMS320C55x DSP debug module and the ARM processor. It is customized to support OMAP platform peripherals with new plug-ins such as the DMA and interrupt controller. Performance enhancements to Code Composer Studio IDE v2 for the OMAP platform enable it to load applications to the target system up to five times faster than previous versions.
Code Composer Studio is the host development environment of eXpressDSP real-time software technology, designed to reduce development time by up to 50%. It provides essential features optimized for multi-site, multi-user work teams working on large projects, with an Integrated Project Manager, source control interface and Update Advisor.
About the OMAP platform
With a scalable, flexible, open architecture that enables the industry's highest performance with dramatically reduced power consumption, TI's OMAP platform for wireless processing delivers voice and multimedia enhanced applications for 2.5 and 3G wireless phones, PDAs and advanced mobile Internet appliances. Top handset manufacturers such as Nokia, Ericsson, Sony, Sendo, LG, Acer and HTC have publicly announced support for TI's OMAP architecture. In addition, leading operating system (OS) vendors, including Symbian, Microsoft, Palm and Sun Microsystems, have endorsed the OMAP architecture, providing millions of Symbian, Windows CE, Java and Linux programmers the ability to develop higher performance applications for 2.5 and 3G mobile devices.
By supporting leading high-level OS and software platforms, the OMAP platform enables a large network of software developers to provide a broad range of new applications for mobile devices. To support this effort, TI has established the OMAP Developer Network to provide developers the tools and support needed for rapid application development, plus the opportunity to collaborate with a range of other developers designing applications such as multimedia, security, speech, location based services, mobile commerce, gaming and much more.
Availability and pricing
Code Composer Studio IDE v2 for the OMAP platform can be purchased today from TI authorized distributors. It is priced at $4,500 per copy and runs on Windows 98, NT and 2000. Free evaluation tools are also available now; please go to http://www.ti.com/sc/omaptools1 to order.
