Texas Instruments' Power-Efficient Thermoelectric Cooler Drivers Minimize Size and Heat in Optical Applications

DALLAS, (Dec. 5, 2001) -- Providing the industry's smallest and most efficient solution for driving thermoelectric cooler (TEC) elements and biasing laser diodes in optical networking applications, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE:TXN) delivers two high-efficiency pulse-width modulation (PWM) power drivers and an H-bridge that eliminate the need for large heat sinks required by most linear solutions. The DRV59x family allows designers to shrink their solutions more than 80 percent compared to some discrete implementations. In addition to eliminating large MOSFETs and heat sinks, these high-efficiency devices only take up a small 9mm by 9mm footprint in the quad flatpack package.
"To save even more area, the new devices will soon be available in extremely small 4mm by 4mm and 5mm by 5mm MicroStar Jr BGA packages," said Dave Skinner, applications and product developer, TI TEC Driver Products. "The need to enable more channels per rack is driving down the size of optical transponders and our solution satisfies that need."
The DRV59x Family
The DRV590 and DRV591 (±1.2-A and ±3-A respectively) high efficiency PWM power drivers possess a 2.8 V to 5.5 V voltage supply range. The DRV592, a ±3-A high-efficiency H-bridge, may be driven from any external PWM generator with TTL logic outputs, such as a DSP, a micro-controller or an FPGA. All devices are internally protected against overheating and current overloads.
Logic-level fault indicators signal when the device junction temperature has reached approximately 130°C, allowing for system-level shutdown before the power driver's internal thermal shutdown circuitry activates. The fault indicators also signal when an over-current event has occurred. If the over-current circuitry is tripped, in either device, it will automatically reset when the device returns to its normal operating range. The DRV590 has four internal gain settings that are controlled by two input terminals, GAIN1 and GAIN0, while the DRV591 is optimally fixed at 2.34 V/V.

The DRV590, DRV591 and DRV592 are available now from TI and its authorized distributors in a standard PowerPAD surface mount 20-pin small outline package (SOIC). The DRV591 and DRV592 are available in a PowerPAD surface mount 32-pin plastic quad flatpack package (PQFQ). Suggested resale pricing in quantities of 1000 is $6.87 for the DRV590, $12.34 for the DRV591 and $11.89 for the DRV592.
