TI's Programmable DSP Takes Home EDN "Innovation of the Year" Award
Power-Efficient DSP Meets Low-Power/High-Processing Needs
HOUSTON (April 10, 2001) - Digital signal processing (DSP) technology from Texas Instruments (TI) (NYSE: TXN) was again awarded top honors when TI took home the coveted EDN magazine 2000 "Innovation of the Year" Award in the DSP category. The award was given to TI at EDN magazine's annual "Innovation of the Year" Awards ceremony held Monday night in San Francisco, Calif.
Selected by public vote among EDN readers across the industry, TI's power-efficient TMS320C5510 DSP,www.ti.com/sc/c5510, was recognized as this year's truly outstanding DSP product. The programmable C5510 DSP is based on TI's revolutionary TMS320C55x DSP generation core, which continues the TMS320C5000 DSP platform's focus on high performance and smaller code size all with low power consumption. The C55x DSP generation core uses advanced power management techniques to deliver up to 400 million instructions per second (MIPS) processing performance with a roadmap of core power dissipation as low as 0.05 milliwatts (mW) per MIPS.
The C5510 DSP is the most power-efficient of any DSP shipping today and is ideal for applications requiring high-processing speed, generous on-chip memory and low-power consumption. The C5510 DSP recently topped $200 million in design commitments only eight months after its introduction to the market.
"Effective communications hinge on low-power consumption and the ability to add new capabilities to existing technology," said ITT Industries Spokesperson John Kirkwood, who has chosen the C5510 DSP for the tactical transceivers the company is proposing for the U.S. Department of Defense Joint Tactical Radio System. "TI's DSPs will allow us to meet these criteria."
The C5510 DSP initially is available at a clock rate of 160 megahertz (MHz), or 320 MIPS, with device power consumption of only 80 mW. Production of 200 MHz versions of the C5510 DSP are planned for the second half of this year. TI also plans to offer one-volt versions of the C5510 DSP, with core power at a cool 0.05mw/MIPS.
"TI is committed to code compatibility," said Christine Wu, C5000 DSP product marketing manager. "Customers are preserving their code investment and leveraging the installed base of the world's most prolific DSP platform, the TMS320C54x, when designing with the C5510 DSP. TI also offers complementary analog products and unparalleled technical and software support.
Other recent awards for the C55x DSP generation include Microprocessor Report's "Analysts Choice" Award and Internet Telephony's "Product of the Year" Award. The "Innovation of the Year" Award is EDN magazine's exclusive awards program dedicated to honoring truly outstanding and innovative engineering products in the electronics industry each year. Award winners are selected by the readers of EDN from a list of finalists selected by EDN editors. EDN will feature the winners in its April 26 issue.
