TI introduces smallest Impedance Track™ battery fuel gauge for handheld electronics

Extends family of high-accuracy battery fuel gauges with system- and pack-side devices

Bangalore (March 10, 2009) - Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) today introduced a single-cell battery fuel gauge integrated circuit (IC) with Impedance Track™ technology, which is half the size of its predecessor. The tiny bq27505 stand-alone lithium battery capacity monitoring and reporting device resides in the system and measures only 2.5 mm x 2 mm x 0.625 mm, and supports portable applications, such as smart phones, digital cameras and MP3 players, where maintaining long battery life is critical for end users. For details see: www.ti.com/bq275xx-pr.

TI also introduced the bq27541, which resides within a battery pack or on the system’s main board in an embedded, non-removable battery. The device also provides secure battery pack authentication, using the SHA-1/HMAC authentication algorithm.

Impedance Track technology accurately predicts battery capacity instantly under all operating conditions, including battery age, temperature and discharge behavior. Today, TI ships millions of battery fuel gauge ICs with Impedance Track technology to customers worldwide in applications ranging from notebooks to smart phones.

Key features of the bq27505 Key benefits
  • Patented Impedance Track next-generation gauging algorithm
  • Accurate and complete battery fuel gaug
  • CPU-based IC reports remaining capacity, time-to-empty, voltage, current, temperature and more
  • Calculates remaining charge under all conditions
  • System-side implementation even with a removable battery
  • 12-pin, 2.5 x 2 x 0.625 mm WCSP package
  • Provides complete “state-of-health” battery information so a system can effectively manage the battery and extend run-time
  • No calculations needed with the host microcontroller for easy implementation
  • Accurate display of run time under all conditions
  • No extra circuitry needed inside the battery pack
  • Smallest Impedance Track solution in the industry
