Fault Protection

The TPS922152 provides comprehensive fault protection and reports status by asserting the open-drain FAULT pin under various fault conditions, including: LED open/short, LED short to PGND, sense resistor open/short, and switching FET open. Upon detecting a fault, the device immediately suspends switching operations and enters a "hiccup" mode, attempting to restart every 1.6 seconds. The device will fully recover once the fault condition is cleared. However, if VCS exceeds the Overvoltage Protection (VCS_OVP) threshold, the device is disabled immediately without entering hiccup mode; it will only resume operation following a UVLO and restart sequence, provided the fault has been removed.
Table 6-2 Protections
TYPE CRITERION BEHAVIOR
LED open load tON > tON_MAX The device stops switching. It hiccups every 1.6s and recovers when fault is removed.
LED+ and LED- short circuit during switching operation (shunt dimming mode is disabled) VCS > VCS_OVP The device stops switching. It recovers after UVLO and restart with fault removed.
LED- short to PGND tON > tON_MAX The device stops switching. It hiccups every 1.6s and recovers when fault is removed.
Sense-resistor open circuit VCS > VCS_OVP The device stops switching. It recovers after UVLO and restart with fault removed.
Sense-resistor short circuit tON > tON_MAX The device stops switching. It hiccups every 1.6s and recovers when fault is removed.
Switching FET open circuit tON > tON_MAX The device stops switching. It hiccups every 1.6s and recovers when fault is removed.

The FAULT pin features an open-drain output, During normal operation, the pin is pulled up to VCC higher than 2.4V via a pull-up resistor, RFAULT. Upon detection of a fault, the internal MOSFET activates, pulling the FAULT pin to ground. When FAULT is not used, please connect it to GND and do not let it floating.
