Overview

This automotive single-ended primary inductor converter (SEPIC) reference design uses either the LM5156-Q1 or LM51561-Q1 device to support a modulated output voltage with a sinusoidal waveform of 60 VPP up to 120 Hz. The magnetizing inductance is minimized to operate the power stage in discontinuous mode (DCM), moving the right half plane zero at the lowest input voltage and maximum load beyond 300 kHz. The dynamics are limited by the gain bandwidth of the error amplifier and the Nyquist criteria. A loop bandwidth of 10 kHz is sufficient for 100 Hz at the output. DCM removes reverse recovery charge ringing at the semiconductors and the dual inductor gets small. The high ripple current results in magnetizing losses, alternating current losses at the winding and a large output ripple voltage. In this situation, this is acceptable for a low maximum output power of 18 W.

Features
  • 10-kHz loop bandwidth is used for best dynamics.
  • The output voltage can be modulated up to a frequency of 120-Hz sinusoidal.
  • This reference design is completely built and tested in a lab.
