Webinar - How to Reduce the Total Size of FPGA Solutions
With the increasing complexity of industrial systems, such as factory automation, more powerful controllers are required. FPGAs are widely used to handle and coordinate the diverse set of tasks required. These devices have very tight power supply requirements which need to be addressed. This session will discuss the key power requirements of the main power rails in such industrial systems and compare different solutions with the newest industrial switching power supplies. These high bandwidth converters providing a great feature set like 1% DC accuracy, forced PWM mode, excellent Transient performance and wide Vin range. Using these features enables the design of small and highly efficient power supplies with very small bill of material which still provide the tight supply tolerances of the FPGA power rails. This saves space and cost with no degradation of performance. The first part of this presentation will detail the FPGA power supply requirements. To understand the key IC parameters a step by step calculation is included as well. In the second part, an example calculation based on a new Buck converter IC is performed to compare the results with measured bench data. Beside of the switching power supply performance the PCB layout and output impedance is a key element to fulfill the tight requirements of the FPGA rails. This will be covered in the third part. To help getting started, the technical aspects of various reference designs are discussed at the end.
