While high frequency variations of load are common to most devices and handled with traditional gauging algorithms, a class of devices like power tools have discrete load profiles. For example when drilling a hole, very high current spike occurs, which is followed by no load at all. This makes the definition of discharge current and cell impedance depended on the duration of the load. Prediction remaining capacity in such case is less meaningful then prediction of number of pulses. In addition, power tool applications have a series of challenges related to the need of fast charging while achieving acceptable cycle life. This presentation covers the key aspects of gauging and fast charging for highly intermittent load applications.
