Switching loss – overlap

In this lecture, we will learn:
  • While either voltage or current is usually zero for a switch, this is not true during switch transitions.
  • The switch transition is extremely short, but the power is very high, so energy loss per cycle is substantial.
  • Increasing switch transition speed will reduce overlap loss (but not loss from parasitic stored energy).
