Battery gauging requires information about system load and cell behavior. Cell behavior changes over time due to aging, so it is important for the gauge to learn how a specific cell ages. Rarely discharged applications pose a challenge, because without regular discharge and charge cycles, the gauge cannot learn how the cell’s behavior changes as it ages. This presentation will discuss various approaches from a system and gauge perspective on how to solve this challenge.
