Cordless Garden tools are moving away from brushed motors to brushless DC motors (BLDC) to maximize efficiency at full and partial loads, and to achieve accurate speed and torque control over wide operation range. As these motors are electronically commutated, integrated semiconductor motor driver ICs and solutions are needed to enable more efficient, durable, and quiet motor drives.
With the compact size of handheld tools, the control board of the system needs to be as small as possible, which requires higher integration of the components used on the PCB as well as better thermal management of the power stage.
Our system-based solutions also demonstrate accurate current, temperature and rotation monitoring. Capacitance or inductive sensing-based user control interfaces enable robust and reliable knob, slider, trigger, or button controls that do not wear down like common resistive switches or potentiometer- based controls.
Our fully tested TI Designs help address these design challenges as well as thermal management, meeting EMI/EMC requirements, achieving small PCB form factor and higher motor drive stage efficiency with additional safety and sensing features.
