6.4.4 Operation In Self Protection

When an overload occurs, the device shuts down the Darlington NPN output stage or reduces the output current to prevent device damage. The device automatically restarts when the over current is removed. Until the overload condition is removed, the output of the LM317L can be reduced or the device can cycle in and out of thermal shutdown, which can impact the long-term reliability of the device.
