Parking occupancy sensor demo

00:01:40 | 22 OCT 2021

This video shows how TI mmWave sensors could be used for multi-space occupancy sensor applications in a parking garage. The range, velocity and angle data from TI mmWave sensors can enable the detection of parked or stationary cars as they enter or exit zones of interest/parking spaces. Compared to ultrasonic or camera-based sensors, mmWave radar can track multiple spots simultaneously with a single sensor, reducing installation and deployment costs without privacy concerns.

The IWR6843 runs two algorithms to achieve this application:

  1. Static detection algorithm - allows for reflections from up to 4 stationary vehicles to be identified and accurately placed into pre-defined parking spaces. Using the static detection algorithm enables the detection of static objects cars, trucks, and other large objects while ignoring the permanent static objects that comprise the scene such as poles, columns and walls.
  2. Group tracking algorithm - the sensor is able to gauge a moving person's trajectory and speed, enabling the occupancy detection system to differentiate between the parked automobile and entering or exiting people.

In this demo, the hardware used is a TI IWR6843ISK EVM. The demo software that runs on the IWR6843 TI mmWave sensor is open source and available on the TI Resource Explorer. It also includes a MATLAB GUI running on a PC to visualize the data.
