United Way | Community leadership | Employee-driven volunteerism

Since TI was founded, our employees have served their communities. Over time, we have invested additional resources to support worthy community programs.

We encourage community involvement and promote volunteer opportunities within our workforce year-round. We currently have no formal policy that limits volunteering time. We leave it up to employees and their managers to determine if activities can be supported during work hours.

We recognize outstanding volunteers with annual TI Founders Community Service Awards. Winners receive recognition and a $1,000 donation in their honor to the nonprofit where they volunteered.

Additionally, in 2012, the TI Foundation introduced its volunteer incentive program. This program matches volunteer hours of active and retired employees with a grant to the organization where they volunteered.

United Way

In the U.S., we primarily coordinate volunteer projects with the United Way and its service provider agencies. This organization is able to identify key community needs, match volunteer opportunities with those willing to help, and measure our collective impact.

In 2012, employees and retirees answered the United Way campaign to "Live United" by volunteering their time and donating funds in record numbers. At the forefront was our chairman, president and CEO Rich Templeton, who served as the 2012-2013 campaign chair for the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas.

Community leadership

Our employees are often asked to serve and lead nonprofits, state and local councils, and business groups. Nonprofit agencies need board members who are well-prepared to strategically direct programs and resources.

It takes experience and education to be a successful board member. That's why we develop employees to be strong community ambassadors by offering courses on nonprofit legal obligations, fundraising and other basic tenets of board service in partnership with the Center for Nonprofit Management.

We currently offer in-person classes in Dallas, and make online training available for other U.S. employees. All employees can access tips and guidance on effective board membership from our internal volunteerism website.

Employee-driven volunteerism

Throughout the world, employees support a variety of community programs, whether they plant trees, mentor children, or help disadvantaged students succeed. While our global initiatives in 2012 are too numerous to list, some examples include:

  • More than 2,300 employees gave almost 5,700 hours of time to support 80 Days of Impact volunteer projects for United Way service providers.
  • More than 50 employees and retirees served in leadership positions and on committees with United Way of Metropolitan Dallas affiliates.
  • Rich Templeton, our chairman, president and CEO, joined about 100 young professional volunteers to give school supplies and backpacks to families in need as part of a United Way-financed literacy program at the Vickery Meadows Learning Center in Dallas. The event encourages young adults to volunteer in their communities and get involved with United Way.
  • More than 100 employees repaired and painted homes and spruced up yards in Hamilton Park as part of the Dallas Leadership Foundation's annual Celebration of Hope Day.
  • At our site in Sherman, Texas, volunteers cooked and served meals each month for Grand Central Station's Dining Car, a local soup kitchen.
  • Employees in South Portland, Maine, volunteered at events and raised funds for STRIVE, a program for young adults with disabilities.
  • Our Manchester, N.H., employees prepared meals and sorted food and toiletries for New Horizons, a local homeless shelter.
  • In Tucson, Ariz., 90 employees volunteered more than 400 hours for a landscaping project at St. Luke's Assisted Home Care.
  • Santa Clara, Calif. employees gave 1,710 hours of their time to sort and assemble gift bags and bicycles for local holiday programs. They also volunteered 180 hours to lead the Frank Greene Summer Science Institute for African-American middle school students interested in science.
  • More than 100 volunteers planted 500 saplings on the All India Radio campus in Hoskote, India.
  • Employees assisted in event management of the Dhwani-BKF Pt. Mallikarjun Mansur Hindustani Music Festival to raise funds for dialysis patients. TI India also sponsored 52 free dialyses through the Rangadore Memorial Foundation.
  • Employees in India volunteered more than 500 hours and donated funds to support more than 800 students involved in the Early Bird Scholarship Program, which provides underprivileged children an education.
  • In Shanghai, 30 volunteers hosted 40 local high school students during Junior Achievement's Job Shadow Day program. Employees also shared their career experiences during Junior Achievement's Career Goal program.
  • More than 30 employees organized caring activities for autistic children in Shanghai.
  • In China, employees in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen and Chengdu donated clothes to people in need in Xijiang and Yunnan.
  • More than 120 volunteers built tables and chairs for classrooms and helped renovate San Vincente Elementary School in the Philippines.
  • More than 120 employees and their families planted 2,500 pine trees to save the Philippines' Sagudin River and Balili River from degradation.
  • Employees in Scotland volunteered for the Scottish Spina Bifida Association at both its Charity Cycle and Spooktacular youth group events.
  • In Malaysia, employees coordinated an annual school holiday camp with 180 children. They conducted a hands-on program on healthy habits, fire safety and prevention, and care of the environment.
  • TI France employees participated in the Défis Mécénova, an initiative launched by the IMS agency, whose mission involves helping companies develop efforts toward more social equity.
