MCAL and AUTOSAR Basics

Modern vehicles integrate hundreds of electronic control units (ECUs) spanning various vehicle systems and domains, such as body electronics, ADAS, and lighting. Each system has different levels of security and safety requirements, incorporated across ECUs from multiple vendors. Managing this complexity demands standardized software frameworks that enable portability, interoperability, and efficient development cycles. This need is addressed by an industry-standard layered framework called AUTOSAR (AUTomotive Open System ARchitecture), and its lowest-level component, the Microcontroller Abstraction Layer (MCAL).
