GPIO Configuration Example

The ADC810 can be configured to behave as an IO Expander in the different modes specified in the IO registers.

ADC810 ADC810-Q1 GPIO Input and Output Configuration HighlightFigure 8-4 GPIO Input and Output Configuration Highlight.

GPIO All Pins (except INT pin) Configured to Inputs

The device is configured so that all pins except the INT pin are inputs.

To do so, we'll write to the Pin Function register to set the pins to GPIO functionality, then write to the I/O Direction register to set the pins to inputs:

  1. I2C Controller Data Message #1 = {0x08,0x05,0x00}

  2. I2C Controller Data Message #2 = {0x07,0x02,0xFF}

When a GPIO changes from its original state to a new reading, the INT pin will indicate a change. To reset/update the IO input states (reset the INT pin), the user needs to read from the Input register.

If the user wants to change the input polarity of the input pins, the additional message can be written into the I/O Polarity Inversion register:

  1. I2C Controller Data Message #3 = {0x06,0x02,0xFF}

GPIO All Pins Configured to Outputs

The device is configured so that all pins are outputting a high signal.

To do so, we'll write to the Pin Function register to set the pins to GPIO mode, then write to the I/O Direction register to set the pins to output mode. Finally, we'll set the I/O Output Port register to a desired value, which in this case will be high:

  1. I2C Controller Data Message #1 = {0x08,0x04,0x00}

  2. I2C Controller Data Message #2 = {0x07,0x00,0x00}

  3. I2C Controller Data Message #2 = {0x05,0x03,0xFF}
