Introduction to GaN IPMs

Intelligent power modules (IPMs) built with gallium nitride (GaN) enable higher power density and efficiency than traditional silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors and insulated-gate bipolar transistors.

Benefits:

  • >99% efficiency in the power stage eliminates the need for cooling components such as heat sinks, improving overall efficiency and reducing  motor-driver system size.
  • <150ns dead time and propagation delay, along with higher pulse-width modulation switching frequencies, reduce current distortion to improve acoustic performance.

Introduction to smart gate drive

Smart gate drivers integrate passive components to reduce board size, design complexity and cost. The protection and configurability offered by smart gate drive improves design simplicity and brings a new level of intelligence to motor systems.

Benefits:

  • Reduce system cost: Integrate up to 24 external components typically used in standard gate drivers to reduce printed-circuit-board size.
  • Reliable protection: Built-in MOSFET drain-source and gate-source fault detection to prevent false FET turnon caused by coupling.
  • Ease of use: Simplify design with integrated automatic dead time and programmable gate drive current to optimize electromagnetic interference.
