AFE for insulation monitoring in high-voltage EV charging and solar energy reference design
This reference design features an electric bridge DC insulation monitoring (DC-IM) method which allows an accurate symmetrical and asymmetrical insulation leakage detection mechanism and an isolation resistance detection mechanism. We present a new generation of isolated amplifiers and switchers that enable isolation without an external supply on the hot side. Therefore, the MCU can power the isolation device from the cold side. The insulation monitoring diagnostic can be handled directly by the power conversion or charging protocol MCU.
- Monitors isolation resistance and insulation leakage from DC to protective earth (PE) at regular intervals
- Detects insulation fault and symmetrical and asymmetrical warnings
- Method: switch in resistive divider branch to determine isolation resistance of DC+ or DC– to PE
- Reinforced insulation analog front end (AFE) for MCUs sitting on the cold side
- No external supply on hot side
A fully assembled board has been developed for testing and performance validation only, and is not available for sale.
