Understanding DLP technology

Precision light control built to scale

DLP technology uses DMDs to control light with exceptional precision, speed and reliability. Millions of microscopic mirrors rapidly direct light to enable high-performance optical systems across markets:

  • Automotive: adaptive headlights, head-up displays, and dynamic interior lighting with micron-level precision.
  • Display & projection: bright, sharp, color-accurate images that scale from pocket-size to large-venue.
  • Industrial: high-speed pattern projection for 3D printing, machine vision, and spectroscopy.

Integrated components that drive DLP performance

A DLP chipset is the core of every DLP system, combining three key components:

  • The DLP digital micromirror device (DMD), which reflects and modulates light
  • The controller, which manages data input and mirror actuation
  • The driver, which powers and times the micromirror operatopm

Together, these componenets translate digital input into precise light output, enabling engineers to design scalable, reliable and high-performance optical systems across a range of applications.

DLP products design & development

After selecting your chipset, leverage our complete ecosystem of hardware, software tools, and optical module resources - including third-party partner solutions - to accelerate your design from evaluation to a market-ready product.

After selecting the appropriate DLP chipset, choose the right EVM for your application to begin evaluation. Use our PCB design guidelines to accelerate development and ensure proper implementation to protect your system.

Pair your EVM with our firmware and graphical interfaces to control, test, and troubleshoot your chipset. Accelerate development with our software tools including APIs, brightness and projection calculators, configuration firmware, and software development kits (SDKs).

Optical modules complete your DLP system by integrating the DMD with illumination (LEDs), optics and mechanics into a compact assembly. Design your own using TI reference designs, or source a turnkey solution through our optical module partner ecosystem to accelerate your time to market.

We provide a variety of educational resources and technical support to help guide you through your design from concept to final product.
