Introduction

As the density of drones that can fly beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) increases within shared airspace of manned aircraft, the necessity for “Sense and Avoid” technology has moved from a discretionary feature to a regulatory requirement under the proposed FAA Part 108. To provide collision avoidance, between unmanned drones and manned aviation, drones must possess the ability to detect and interpret the movements of nearby aircraft. Because manned aircraft already broadcast ADS-B signals, drones can leverage reception of the ADS-B signals to meet the new regulatory requirements.
