Transmission line effects become significant for signals above 50MHz or trace lengths exceeding 6 inches. Impedance mismatches cause reflections that can double the signal voltage at the receiving end.
For high-speed interfaces on AM26xx (RGMII, OSPI/QSPI) and C2000 (eQEP, high-speed PWM):
• Match trace impedance to driver/receiver specifications (typically 50Ω single-ended, 100Ω differential)
• Provide proper termination: series termination at driver, parallel termination at receiver, or AC termination for bidirectional signals
• Keep trace lengths matched for differential pairs (within 5 mils)
• Avoid stubs longer than λ/10 at maximum operating frequency
Without proper termination, reflected voltage can reach 2× times IO Voltage, potentially activating or exceeding ESD diode ratings.
