To help systems driving high-intertia loads, or systems that can be exposed to generator-mode conditions (where the motor is being externally turned), the DRV8762-Q1 incorporates an advanced Active Short Circuit feature. This feature, which can be triggered through the ASCIN pin, through SPI, or automatically in response to VDRAIN Overvoltage, turns on both high-side or both low-side MOSFETs to recirculate the motor current and avoid further increasing the supply voltage through diode rectification.
The default selection for high-side or low-side ASC is configurable through the ASC_POLARITY bit. However, to provide robustness through a variety of operating conditions and system fault scenarios, the DRV8762-Q1 automatically switches between high-side and low-side ASC. This behavior is summarized in the chart below:
