Motor Driver Design Guidance

  • Low-feature smart locks (almost no wireless connectivity, basic locks): Require small size and simple design; motor current chopping/feedback typically does not use current regulation—no inrush current limitation for brushed DC motors; lock position can be determined via Hall or magnetic sensors.
  • High-end smart locks: Require small size, protection features, and position/speed control; utilize current regulation (low-side sensing resistor)—limits inrush current when the motor starts, protecting the battery system and extending battery life.

Table 5‑2 lists the recommended motor driver products for use in electronic lock systems.
