ADVANCE INFORMATION
When switching off inductive loads, voltage clamping is necessary to prevent device damage. The active clamping circuit consists of a zener stack connected between the Drain and the Gate. When the kickback voltage exceeds the Zener threshold , the kickback pushes current into the gate, forcing the FET to turn back on slightly in the saturation region. This dissipates the inductive energy directly inside the FET in a controlled manner.
