Current Limit Operation

The TLV612901 device features an average inductor current limit scheme.

In DC/DC boost mode, the TLV612901 device employs an average inductor current limit detection scheme and senses the voltage drop across the synchronous rectifier during the off-time. The average inductor current limit threshold can be set through an I2C register, and the default value is 8A (typical). When this current limit is reached, if the output current continues to increase, the TLV612901 reduces the output voltage while maintaining the inductor current at the current limit value.

Equation 6 calculates the maximum continuous output current (IOUT(max)) before entering current limit (CL).

  • η is the efficiency
  • IOUT(max) is the maximum output current
  • ILIMIT is the current limit of the input side
  • VIN is the input voltage
  • VOUT is the output voltage

In bypass mode, the TLV612901 device is protected by a very fast current limit detection scheme. If the current in the bypass FET exceeds approximately 8A, the device turns off the bypass FET after a small delay, ca. 200ns. Then, the device cycles through a start-up procedure.
