Current Limit Threshold

The inductor saturation current rating needs to handle the expected overcurrent in the system. To determine the proper saturation current rating, the valley overcurrent threshold, and the corresponding peak current during that mode, are calculated. Referring to Equation 14, the valley overcurrent protection limit is selected according to Equation 18.

Equation 18. IVALLEY=M×IOUT_MAXn-IPP2

In this equation:

  • M is the desired percentage margin above the maximum load current

After the desired valley current for the overcurrent is determined, the proper value of ROCL needed to program this threshold is determined based on equating Equation 14 and Equation 15. The minimum saturation current rating that is required of the inductor is based on the worst-case peak current seen during the overcurrent condition, as calculated in Equation 19.
