SLVSMQ4 September 2026 TPS7H5101-SEP
ADVANCE INFORMATION
The TPS7H5101 is designed to operate from an input supply voltage of 4.5V to 15V. This voltage is applied to the VIN pin of the device. The input voltage supply for the controller needs to be well regulated and properly bypassed for best electrical performance. A minimum input bypass capacitor of 1µF from VIN to GND is needed for best performance, but additional capacitance can be used to improve the noise performance of the controller. Place these capacitors as close to the controller as possible with a low impedance path to GND.
The TPS7H5101 uses an adaptive on-time architecture, which adjusts the on-time of the output pulses based on several factors, including the input voltage. As such, to maintain a relatively constant switching frequency during steady-state operation, the controller input voltage at VIN needs to be the same as input voltage of the buck converter power stage. If using the TPS7H5101 in conjunction with the TPS7H6200 power stage, PVIN of the power stage and VIN of the controller are the same. Both the on-time and current sharing circuitry of the controller require the input from the power stage to operate as intended.
Sufficient bulk and decoupling capacitors are required near the power stage voltage connection to the FETs to minimize overall impedance and improve converter efficiency. Refer to the Power Supply Recommendations and Layout Guidelines for the TPS7H6200 for additional details.
