Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE), defined by IEEE 802.3az, is a capability integrated into Layer 1 (Physical Layer) and Layer 2 (Data Link Layer) to operate in Low Power Idle (LPI) mode. In LPI mode, power is saved during periods of low packet utilization. EEE defines the protocol to enter and exit LPI mode without dropping the link or corrupting packets.
The DP83C8201Fx EEE supports 100Mbps and 10Mbps speeds. EEE is supported for both MII and RMII MAC interface. In 10BASE-Te operation, EEE operates with a reduced transmit amplitude that is fully interoperable with a 10BASE-T PHY.
EEE must be enabled through register programming. The steps below describe how to configure the DP83C8201Fx for EEE through the MDC/MDIO interface.
