Soft-Start (SS)

A capacitor from the soft-start pin (SS) to GND is used to allow for a controlled rise of the output voltage. This is particularly helpful to prevent excessive inrush current in the converter is caused due to the large output capacitance. The capacitance for the desired soft-start time can be selected as shown in Equation 13:

Equation 13. CSS=tSS×ISSVOUT_SET

where:

  • tSS is the desired soft-start time
  • VOUT_SET is the output voltage setpoint determined using RSET
  • ISS is the soft-start charging current

During soft-start, the controller uses the voltage on the SS pin as the reference until the SS pin voltage exceeds VOUT_SET. After the SS pin voltage is greater than VOUT_SET, the soft-start period is considered complete. To support pre-biased outputs during startup, the TPS7H5101 always sends a pulse to the high-side FET first. As such, it is critical that high-side gate drive circuitry that is used in conjunction with the controller has sufficient voltage before initiating soft-start with the controller.
