Rechargeable batteries are used as the power supply source in many portable electronic equipment such as laptops, cell phones, and digital cameras. The most popular rechargeable batteries are nickel-cadmium (NiCd), nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH), and lithium-ion (Li-ion), and charging circuits depend on the battery chemistry. This application report describes a method to charge a Li-ion battery using an MSP430 microcontroller.
