The ADS1x4S1x integrate a bias voltage generator, VBIAS, which provides a buffered voltage equal to half the analog supply voltage, (AVDD + AVSS) / 2. The bias voltage can be established on the analog inputs AIN0 to AIN7 using the VBIAS_AINx bits. VBIAS can be routed to multiple analog inputs at the same time. The purpose of the bias voltage is to shift the signal level of floating sensors, such as isolated thermocouples, to within the input range of the PGA. Connect one lead of the floating sensor to an analog input that has VBIAS enabled.
The start-up time of the bias voltage generator depends on the pin load capacitance. The total capacitance includes any capacitance connected from VBIAS to AVDD, AVSS, and ground. Table 7-12 lists typical VBIAS voltage settling times for various external load capacitances. Make sure the VBIAS voltage is fully settled before starting a conversion.
| LOAD CAPACITANCE | SETTLING TIME |
|---|---|
| 0.1µF | 200μs |
| 1µF | 2.5ms |
| 10µF | 12ms |
