Optimising the Self-Heating Trim to Achieve Lowest THD Across Frequencies for High Voltage Swing

At high output voltage swings (>15VPP) and high output frequencies, the third harmonic distortion (HD3) of the DAC90802 can be sub-optimal. To mitigate this, the DAC90802 provides a correction mechanism through the CHx_CFG registers By adjusting the 9-bit VREF_SQx field (values ranging from 0 to 511), users can optimize harmonic performance.

The recommended value for VREF_SQx is calculated using the following equation:

Equation 7. V R E F _ S Q x = A m p 2 × ( b 1 + a × f r e q + c )

where

  • Amp is the amplitude of the output signal (in VPk).
  • freq = Frequency in Hz
  • a = 1.1×10–4, b = 0.85, c = 0.15

Figure 8-5 illustrates the relationship between the normalized vref sq value and frequency (kHz). The normalized vref sq value is defined by the following relationship:

  • Normalized Vref Sq Value = Programmed VREF_SQx / Amp2
