For large capacitive loads, device can trigger thermal shutdown fault and enter into retry thermal shutdown flow. In this case, the retry protection mechanism (Section 8.3.3) of the device allows load to turn on reliably with multiple retry cycles. For most properly sized capacitive loads, the thermal regulation can prevent reaching thermal shutdown conditions, resulting in smooth capacitive charging without interruption. Figure 8-30 shows capactive load charging with multiple thermal shutdown retry cycles. This behavior can be acceptable in applications where capacitive load has high enough load impedance connected in parallel, hence not discharging the capacitor significantly when the device is off during thermal shutdown.
