Detailed Design Procedure

Selection of Main Path MOSFETs

For selecting the main path MOSFETs, important electrical parameters are the maximum continuous drain current ID, the maximum drain-to-source voltage VDS(MAX), the maximum drain-to-source voltage VGS(MAX), and the drain-to-source ON resistance RDS(ON). The maximum continuous drain current rating (ID) must exceed the maximum continuous load current. The maximum drain-to-source voltage, VDS(MAX), must be high enough to withstand the highest voltage seen in the application.

Selection of Bootstrap Capacitor, CBSTx

The internal charge pump charges the external bootstrap capacitor (connected between BSTx and SRCx pins) with ICHx(BST). Use the following equation to calculate the minimum required value of the bootstrap capacitor for driving multiple FETs in parallel.

Equation 11. C B S Tx   =   10   ×   Q gx ( total ) ∆ V BST +   C GATEx

CGATEx is needed only when main FET gate slew rate control method is used for bulk capacitor charging.
