European Union Regulations: Radio Equipment Directive (RED)

The DIRECTIVE 2014/53/EU OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 16 April 2014 on the harmonization of the laws of the Member States relating to the making available on the market of radio equipment and repealing Directive 1999/5/EC. Article 3 essential requirements can be found here.

In accordance with the essential requirement for Radio and electrical equipment sold in the EU, the following harmonized standards can apply to 60GHz and 80GHz radar equipment:

  • EN 62311. Safety, RF exposure - Assessment of electronic and electrical equipment related to human exposure restrictions for electromagnetic fields (0 Hz to 300 GHz). This Standard covers the essential requirements of article 3.1(a) of Directive 2014/53/EU
  • EN 62368-1. Audio/video, information and communication technology equipment - Part 1: Safety requirements, Electrical safety; This also covers the essential requirements of article 3.1(a) of Directive 2014/53/EU
  • EN 301 489-3. Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) standard for radio equipment and services; Part 1: Common technical requirements. This harmonized standard covers the essential requirements of article 3.1(b) of Directive 2014/53/EU and the essential requirements of article 6 of Directive 2014/30/EU.
  • EN 305 550. Short Range Devices (SRD) Radio equipment to be used in the 40 GHz to 246 GHz frequency range; Harmonized Standard for access to radio spectrum. This covers the essential requirements of article 3.2 of Directive 2014/53/EU.
  • EN 302 729. Short Range Devices (SRD) Level Probing Radar (LPR) equipment operating in the frequency ranges ... 57 GHz to 64 GHz, 75 GHz to 85 GHz. Harmonized standard covering the essential requirements of article 3.2 of the Directive 2014/53/EU.
  • EN 302 264. Short Range Devices (SRD) Transport and Traffic Telematics (TTT) equipment operating in the 77 GHz to 81 GHz band. Harmonized Standard covering the essential requirements of article 3.2 of Directive 2014/53/EU.
  • EN 301 091. Short Range Devices (SRD) Transport and Traffic Telematics (TTT); radar equipment operating in the 76 GHz to 77 GHz range. Harmonized Standard covering the essential requirements of article 3.2 of Directive 2014/53/EU.

Typically, end equipment designers must place the CE mark on the outside of the completed end equipment. This is typically 5mm in height, but if adequate space is not available, the size can be reduced so long as the mark remains clearly visible to the naked eye. If there is utterly no space available, then the CE marking on the housing can be omitted. Justification will need to be made with the NB. Additionally, the CE logo and WEEE logo must be placed on the packaging and in the user guide for the finished equipment.
