The increased consumer demand for high quality voice, video and data is the driving force behind the need for new strategies to efficiently use network bandwidth. Consumers demand reliable and robust network infrastructure systems that provide them with increasingly fast download speeds and real-time high definition video and voice. As a result of these demands Multiple System Operators (MSOs) are looking for ways to get more out of their existing cable infrastructure. Cable infrastructure equipment designers are adding intelligence to Cable Modem Termination Systems (CMTS), Set Top Boxes (STB) and cable modems. Adding the ability to first identify the specific content being requested by a subscriber and then allocate the bandwidth to satisfy that subscriber's current need. Adding this type of intelligence along with new networking protocols such as DOCSIS 3.0 frees up bandwidth to provide higher Quality of Service (QoS) to a larger subscriber base.

    A cable modem is for the TV provider what the xDSL modem is for the phone company:
  • It transfers data from the radio frequency (RF) channels to Ethernet and enables customers to enjoy broadband internet access using the TV infrastructure.
  • Cable modems can be expanded to Residential Gateways by offering services like routing, VoIP and Wireless LAN.

TI's extensive portfolio of analog and embedded processing offerings enables the high data rates needed to process multiple streams of high definition video and voice information. Multi-core DSPs and DaVinci SoCs are used to efficiently partition the decoding, processing and encoding of multiple streams of video and have support for Codecs such as MPEG2 and H.264. TI's synchronous switching controllers combined with high speed NexFETs provide a high efficiency power solution that reduces power consumption and improves the thermal performance of the CMTS. High speed interface options provide flexibility and signal integrity to route data through the board and back plane.
