The incremental count and hence the incremental coarse angle can be determined by a counter, that counts up when A is the leading sequence and counts down when B is the leading sequence. When digitized, both edges of A and B are counted. Hence one incremental count is equivalent to a 90° phase shift of both signals A and B, see Figure 1-3. The incremental count starts from 0 with the maximum incremental count incrMAX per Equation 2, where N is the line count:
