Packets can be dropped within an Rx Port for any number for reasons which with the exception of the starvation case which was covered above are application specific.
When a Port determines that it needs to drop a packet after reception of the packet has begun, it must flush the remainder of the packet, increment the dropped packets statistic, and rewind any fetched descriptor/buffer chain so that the it can be use the same descriptor/buffer chain on the next packet.
